Aspire Module Overview

Module 2, Aspire, introduces students to the wide range of different pathways open to them. This module helps spark self-discovery by getting students thinking about their skills, subject choices and possible routes that they may wish to explore.

This module also helps young people navigate the maze of information available and provides practical support and guidance to help them make informed choices. The Business Ambassador brings invaluable insight by drawing on their own personal experiences within their career journey to give a real life context.

Module Aims

  • Raise student aspirations around different career pathways and start students thinking about their own career plan.
  • By the end of this lesson students will be able to recognise the range of motivational factors that will affect their career choices and that these will change over time.
  • To broaden the students understanding of the range of roles and jobs available by: a) exploring the number of jobs involved in producing a mobile phone and b) exploring the career pathway of the Business Ambassador.

Learning Objectives

  • To introduce the idea that the job market always changes.
  • To consider that different roles may offer different rewards and fulfil different motivations and that this might change over time.
  • To consider their own possible motivations for going to work and explain their reasons.
  • To improve students communication skills.

Key Messages

  • Think about what’s important to you – these priorities will change as you develop but this should help guide the decisions you make.
  • Don’t be afraid to be ambitious – if you want it, go and get it!

Aspire – Activity One

How Many Jobs

Working in small groups students are challenged to create a list with as many possible career pathways associated with a smart phone. Supported by the business ambassador (and an extensive crib sheet), this activity introduces students to a large number of jobs, to the idea that the job market changes over time and improves commercial understanding.

Key message: It is important that students develop skills, qualities and achieve qualifications to allow them to make full use of the changing job market.

Aspire – Activity Two

Go Compare

The students are presented with 4 contrasting jobs and are asked to compare aspects of each role and consider the reasons why someone would take each job.   This activity allows students to explore the reasons why people take different career decisions and builds their understanding of what factors should be considered when deciding on their own career.

The activity can be tailored to reflect a range of occupational areas and works best when the Business Ambassador is familiar with the roles chosen.

Aspire – Activity Three

Priority Diamond

Using a Diamond 9 ranking activity students explore the different motivations behind why people go to work.

Students own career plans are brought to life as they consider their views, discuss their motivations and share their  aspirations for what they will find in their working life. With the help of the business ambassador students will understand that there is more to a job then a paycheck.
